District Baseball Teams Selection Process
by
posted 04/24/2013 Darien will enter two teams (American and National) in each of the 11/12, 11, and 9/10 year-old divisions of the Little League tournaments. In order to be eligible to be selected to a District team, players must have 1) met the minimum playing requirement (one at bat and three innings in the field) in 60% or more of their team’s regular season (including Pool Play) games, and 2) recorded at least 20 plate appearances during these games. Majors and Minors teams are scheduled to play 14 regular season games; a player will need to meet the minimum playing requirement in 9 of the 14 games to meet the 60% threshold.
Eleven year olds may be selected for either the 11/12 or the 11 year-old teams. In recent history, the substantial majority of players on the 11/12 team are 12 years old. By current league policy, only 11 year olds are selected for the 11 year-old team. There are approximately 155 eleven and twelve year-olds in Majors this season; approximately 50 of whom will be selected for an 11 year-old or a 11/12 team.
Nine and ten year olds playing in Majors and Minors are eligible for selection to the 9/10 year-old team.
The selection processes for the 11/12 and the 11 year-old teams are similar. For 2013, these processes will be overseen by James Batson, Majors Commissioner, and Greg Doll, Majors Player Agent. Selection to the 11/12 and 11 year-old teams is done by a vote of all Majors players and managers during the first week of June. The Manager vote is conducted following a meeting during which all managers review league statistics and evaluate the strengths of each player. While all players who have met the minimum 60% standard are eligible, players who play in a greater number of games are more likely to demonstrate the level of performance necessary to earn a spot on a team.
Because 9 and 10 year-olds are split between the Majors and Minors Divisions, and because no official statistics are kept in the Minors Division, the selection of the 9/10 year-old team requires a different process. All players in Majors who are Little League age 10 are offered a spot on the 9/10 year-old team provided that they meet the minimum eligibility requirements. Historically, a majority of the players on the 9/10 year-old teams come from the Majors Division. To the extent additional players are needed to complete the 9/10 year-old teams, players will be selected from the Minors Division. The selection of the Minors players for the 9/10 year-old teams is the responsibility of the Dave Williams, Minors Player Agent, is overseen by Ron Drake, Vice President of Baseball, and takes into account the annual player evaluations completed by Minors managers.
District team practices will begin by June 15. Games will be played between June 25 and July 15. Players are expected to attend all games and the substantial majority of practices.
